Who We Are

Mad Mother Films grows from an older word.

Our first chapter was Aglæcwif Productions, inspired by a misunderstood Old English term historically applied to Grendel’s mother in Beowulf. For centuries, scholars translated it as “monstrous woman,” but more recent readings argue it meant “fierce woman,” “formidable warrior,” or simply a woman powerful enough to challenge a man.

That idea still drives us.

Mad Mother Films tells stories about women who refuse to behave.

We explore the feminine as other; not as a villain or anomaly, but as a source of creativity, conflict, wonder, and force. We are drawn to the margins: folklore, psychological tension, identity, queerness, the blurred edges of reality and self.

Our work embraces experimentation not as a gimmick, but as a way to uncover truths that don’t fit neat narrative boxes. Some of our stories hold darkness. Others hold tenderness. Most hold both.

We believe women do not need to be softened to be understood, and that strangeness can be a form of honesty.

We make films for the ones they’ve mislabeled: the difficult women, the queer women, the sharp-edged women. The ones who take up space and won’t apologize for it.

We experiment.
We break form.
We pry open the walls people build around what women are “allowed” to be on screen.

Mad Mother Films isn’t trying to be palatable.
We’re here to be unforgettable.

Where the Madness Began…

Alyssa Malloy

Alyssa builds stories for those who have been misread.

With a background in experimental film, theater, and narrative design, she creates work that blends cinematic tension with emotional truth. She often explores identity, womanhood, folklore, and the psychological spaces where reality refuses to stay still.

Her films have earned festival recognition, including Best Experimental Short at the Touchstone Independent Film Festival, and her scripts have received 1st place, 3rd place, and the Festival Chair Award at the BEA Festival of Media Arts.

Alyssa holds an MFA in Dramatic Writing and an MA in Creative Writing from Missouri State University, and is currently completing an MBA in Marketing — a commitment to not only telling powerful stories, but building the systems that allow them to thrive.

She continues to champion narratives that live just beyond the edges of expectation: strange, intimate, and defiantly human.

She founded Mad Mother Films to give those stories a home, and to prove that the ungovernable feminine deserves the spotlight.
